Hendrick Avercamp

Biografische gegevens:

Avercamp was doofstom.

Hendrick Avercamp (1585-1634), Baroque Dutch. 21 september 2018

English
Hendrick Barentsz. Avercamp was a non-verbal (and probably deaf) artist known as 'the Mute of Kampen' (de stom van Campen). He specialised in painting winter scenes. His paintings must have appealed to Dutch patriots as representing the landscape and life of the newly formed Republic of the United Provinces of the Netherlands. Avercamp was born in Amsterdam, and trained there probably with Pieter Isaacsz. His manner was based in the first place on that of the Flemish followers of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. He presumably came into contact with one of Bruegel's followers who had settled in Amsterdam, such as David Vinckboons.
His nephew Barent Avercamp (1621-79) imitated his style of painting. Others followed his approach, for example, Arent Arentsz. His carefully characterised groups of small figures are drawn together in the paintings through subtly graduated colour. His pictures were composed in the studio from acutely observed watercolour drawings.

Catalogue note

This hitherto unpublished winter landscape was painted early in the artist’s career, probably around 1610, and is a significant addition to his early œuvre.1 It was originally painted on a panel comprising two horizontal panels, probably of fairly similar width. At some later date, probably after the artist’s death, a small section of the top edge of the upper panel was trimmed, presumably to remove the bevel, and a third horizontal panel was glued to it. The sky was thus extended, creating a more modern winter landscape with a much lowered horizon line. The bare branches of the trees left and right were extended into the added panel, and patches of pale blue sky, unfamiliar in Avercamp’s early winter scenes, were included.

The current appearance of the painting is shown here, but a reconstruction of its original appearance is shown as well, which includes a small section of the added plank, to recover the original proportions (see fig. 1). The lower two planks of the current panel thus comprise about 95% of the originally visible panel, allowing for the rebate of a frame. The proportions and the high horizon line are a key pointer to an early dating, and this is supported by tree-ring analysis (see below). Few of Avercamp’s pictures are dated, and latter-day scholars wisely suggest a relatively broad span of dates for undated works. Nonetheless, a comparison with one of his earliest dated pictures, the small landscape in Bergen, Norway, of 1608 shows a similarly high horizon line, also to be found in other works thought to date from the years around 1610 and the early teens. Avercamp was not consistent with horizon lines, but it is clear that by circa 1620 they are consistently lower, usually around the centre-line of the composition, and by the mid-1620s they are generally lower still. Avercamp’s early pictures are, like the present work, packed full of figures on the ice – too many to count – while many of his later works are sparser.

Details of Avercamp’s life are scant, and no biography of him was written until the latter part of the eighteenth century. His nickname was ‘De Stomme van Kampen’ (the Mute of Kampen), but we do not know for certain if he was in fact deaf or mute or both, and it is more likely that he was man of few words. It has become fashionable to make a romantic connection between his alleged affliction and the isolation from the world which it implies and his subject matter, so that one exhibition a few years ago was even entitled ‘Frozen Silence’. He lived for much of his life and died in Kampen, a city without a strong native artistic tradition in the eastern Dutch province of Overijssel. Avercamp included its fortified walls in several of his winter landscapes. He was however born in Amsterdam and spent some years there, perhaps as many as six, during his apprenticeship to the painter Pieter Isaacsz., whose elegant mannerist style, however, left no visible imprint on him. The present work was very likely painted during Avercamp’s Amsterdam sojourn.

Avercamp liked to re-use particular figures and elements in diverse compositions. Some of these evolved through several pictures over a span of dates, but many are generally found in paintings of roughly the same period. In many-figured paintings such as the present one, a list of such motifs would be a long one, but here follows a sample with its location in the present work listed first:

The rough wooden privy with a naked arse in the moment of defecation to the extreme left occurs first in a work of circa 1605 in Vienna. Similar structures occur in later pictures, but of different architecture and with greater modesty.

Several motifs from the present picture are found in a painting in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, of circa 1608.2 These include the figure kneeling on the ice tying the laces of his skates in the extreme foreground, who is similarly placed in the Amsterdam work, the bird trap to the centre-left – a motif made famous in the works of Pieter Brueghel the Younger where a re-used old wooden door also serves as the trap – found in the lower left of the Amsterdam work, and the man right-of-centre stepping forward on his skates holding a fishing spear found nearer the right foreground in the Amsterdam picture.

A similar, though not identical castle with round tower that dominates the central background occurs in reverse in a similar position in a tondo winter landscape, also of circa 1608, in the National Gallery, London. The boat equipped with runners and flying a flag from its stern sailing away from us close hauled that occurs in the distance is to be found in several winter landscapes by Avercamp.3 Likewise the cartwheel fixed horizontally to a post found to the left, the largely submerged rowing boat to the right, and the remains of a horse frozen in the ice to the extreme left.4

Many other figures are similarly attired stock types that recur, though not identically depicted, in many works by Avercamp. There is a rich variety of lavishly dressed figures, both male and female, in the present picture, in which everyone who can is showing off their finery. Many of the ladies are wearing black sleeveless full-length cloaks, with headdresses with upstanding spikes. These cloaks, of which Avercamp painted in a number of forms, were called huiken, and originated in North Africa, passing via Spain to the Spanish Netherlands, and are often seen in Flemish painting from the late sixteenth century onwards. They would have been less common in Avercamp’s Kampen in the Eastern Netherlands, but were the height of fashion in Brabant, and Avercamp may have seen them in Amsterdam.5 They occur in several other works by him, including the winter landscapes on long-term loan from the Rijksmuseum to The Mauritshuis, The Hague, of circa 1610, and in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, of circa 1620.6 Groups of couples skating away from the viewer, like the ones in the centre of the present picture, are found in several other early works, including the picture dated 1608 in Bergen. Most of the ladies are wearing bell-shaped hooped skirts, originally Spanish, called verdugado or farthingale in English, which were fashionable in Flanders at the end of the sixteenth century, but one has the slightly later drum-shaped hoop skirt which arrived from France in the first decade of the seventeenth century.7 Many of the women in the present picture and many other Avercamps wear black masks, whether to remain incognito or to preserve a desirable complexion, or most likely to protect them from the cold.8 Familiar too from many of the artist’s works are figures playing colf on the ice – here near the river bank to the left.

A familiar characteristic of many of Avercamp’s ice-scenes are the shadows of figures that the artist first included and then, changing his mind, painted out. The gradually increasing translucence of the overpaint often causes these to re-emerge. Perhaps because the artist used thicker paint in the present picture, they are less evident to the naked eye, but several of them can be seen in the infra-red image reproduced here (Fig. X), especially in the right foreground.

We are most grateful to Pieter Roelofs of the Rijksmuseum for his help in cataloguing this picture. He has suggested that the soldiers laying down arms in the left foreground, a motif not found in other works by the artist, may indicate that the painting dates from shortly after the signing of the Treaty of Antwerp in 1609, an armistice which initiated the Twelve Years Truce between the Dutch Republic and the Spanish Netherlands.

Technical analysis

A tree-ring analysis of the three planks currently comprising the panel was conducted by Ian Tyers of Dendrochronological Consultancy Ltd in April 2013.9 The two lower planks were sawn from the same slow-growing and long-lived Baltic oak tree which was felled after 1590, and they were almost certainly available for use during the first decade of the seventeenth century. The original panel was composed of these two planks alone. The added upper plank, also of Baltic oak, was sawn from a tree felled after 1627, and thus unlikely to have been available for use during Avercamp’s lifetime.

X-Ray

An X-Ray taken by Art Access Research in June 2013 shows clearly the consistent character of the lower two planks, and the very different appearance of the upper one, which seems to have a different ground layer (see Fig. 3). Remnants of a painted structure in the upper right corner suggest that the added plank had previously been used as part of the support of another panel painting. This makes it likely that the present panel was enlarged rather later than the earliest likely date of use of the upper plank in the mid-seventeenth century.

Infra-red Imaging

Infra-red imaging (IRR) made by Art Access Research in June 2013 underscores the different character of the upper plank, and clearly shows a pattern of receding black and white floor tiles in the upper right corner, indicating that the previous use of this plank was as the right-hand plank of an upright panel, probably a portrait (see Fig. 2).

Provenance

The early history of this painting is as yet unknown. Although not securely documented in the present family until 1907, it is very probable that the painting entered the collection at a much earlier date. According to family history, the 2nd Baron Kilmaine, M.P. for Carlow 1790–1794, was acquiring paintings in the 1790s as his diary entry records when visiting London on 20 October 1795: ‘Go to Christy’s auction in Pal Mal’. Despite the fact there is no documentary evidence, some of the seventeeth-century Dutch and Flemish paintings and eighteenth-century Irish landscapes purchased at this period are illustrated in nineteenth-century watercolours of the Interiors of The Neale.

The painting is listed in the 1907 Inventory and Valuation of Paintings at The Neale produced by Bennett & Sons at the death of the 4th Baron Kilmaine and a letter and bill addressed to the 5th Baron Kilmaine (1878–1957) at The Neale in September 1909 from John & Edward Tracey, ‘Picture Cleaners, Restorers and Liners to the National Gallery of Ireland’, 13, Heytesbury Street, Dublin: ‘the panel picture, Skating Scene, is also very good. For setting 5 pictures to rights, this including touching up the frame will be £3’.

The painting remained at The Neale until 1925 when the 5th Baron Kilmaine sold his estates in Ireland and the family moved to England. The painting has remained in the collection of the present family hidden from public view until its recent discovery.

• Possibly James Caulfeild-Browne, 2nd Baron Kilmaine (1765–1825), The Neale, Co. Mayo, Ireland; • Francis William Browne, 4th Baron Kilmaine (1843–1907), The Neale, Co. Mayo, Ireland;

• Thence by direct family descent.

Hendrick Avercamp, A Scene on the Ice. C. 1625

English, Nederlands

A Scene on the Ice, c. 1625, by Hendrick Avercamp (1585 - 1634)

Rich and poor mingle on the frozen waters of a river. From the lower left corner, a man quietly observes the many skaters. At the center, well-dressed ladies ride in an elegant sleigh driven by a groom; the horse’s shoes are spiked for traction on the slippery surface. Two little boys in the right corner play a game of colf (or kolf), a cross between modern-day hockey and golf. And in the background, sledges transport people and commercial goods on the frozen waterway.

Avercamp, who combined the Dutch love of landscape with scenes of daily life, was among the first European artists to specialize in depictions of winter. The pearly gray tonality here becomes ever paler and the forms less distinct as they move into the distance, subtly conveying a sense of deep space on a frosty day. The setting may be the IJssel River at Kampen, the Hanseatic town northeast of Amsterdam where Avercamp resided most of his life. Mute since birth and likely deaf as well, Avercamp was called "de Stomme van Kampen," meaning "the Mute of Kampen." Despite this disability, Avercamp had a successful and independent career as a painter of popular winter scenes.

The smooth ice of a frozen river or canal was (and is) a source of great pleasure for the Dutch. The sense of freedom it provided created an almost holiday spirit for both young and old, rich and poor. For the upper class it was a time to enjoy the brisk winter air in beautifully crafted horse-drawn sleighs; for the young at heart it offered a chance to skate along holding hands with a loved one; for others it provided a chance to play kolf, to ice fish, or just to watch the array of humanity enjoying their shared experience. Frozen waterways also served as transportation arteries that enabled the movement of people and goods, so winter days spent on the frozen ice may not always have been as carefree as this description would imply; still, the pictorial and literary traditions from the seventeenth century certainly highlight the positive aspects.[1] Primary among those who created this idyllic image of Dutch winters was Hendrick Avercamp. In numerous landscapes such as this one he recorded the experiences of his compatriots as they skated, sleighed, talked, or just quietly observed the open expanse of smooth ice on a frozen waterway.

Avercamp, who lived in Kampen, far removed from the artistic centers of Haarlem and Amsterdam, worked his entire career in a style that derived from sixteenth century prototypes, where landscape vistas were viewed from above to allow for a panoramic overview of the scene below. The specific type of winter scene favored by Avercamp follows a rich tradition that goes back to Pieter Bruegel the Elder (Flemish, c. 1525/1530 - 1569), such as the latter’s Winter Landscape with Bird-Trap, 1565 (Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Brussels), a composition whose popularity can be measured by the frequent copies made by the Flemish master’s son, Pieter Brueghel the Younger (Flemish, c. 1564 - 1637/1638). Similar scenes appeared in prints and drawings by other artists, including Hans Bol Hans Bol (Netherlandish, 1534 - 1593) [fig. 1] and David Vinckboons (Dutch, 1576 - c. 1632). A number of ice scenes, including compositions by Bol and Vinckboons, were conceived as parts of series representing the four seasons of the year.[2] Other depictions of skaters appear in emblematic prints, where the difficulty of staying upright was associated with the slipperiness of human life.[3]

While Avercamp never strayed very far from these traditions, he did develop this subject matter into a specialty with its own distinctive feel. His work differs from that of his predecessors primarily in the attention he pays to the individuality of the figures in his scenes and the prominence he gives them over the surrounding landscape elements. These characteristics are particularly evident in A Scene on the Ice, in which landscape elements are rendered almost schematically while differences in the social classes and even the individuality of the figures are emphasized by their activities, costumes, and attitudes. Little vignettes can be identified: the solidly middle-class burghers who watch more elegant members of the upper class glide by in their horse-drawn sleigh; the two friends who skate in tandem; the working-class family unloading barrels from a transport sledge; or the couple in the far distance whom others help to their feet. Avercamp does not appear to have been interested in using his winter scene as a means for expressing abstract concepts, such as those associated with seasons of the year or emblematic images. On the contrary, he delighted in capturing the variety of social interactions that occur when whole communities share the pleasures of the ice.

Avercamp, as is characteristic of Dutch seventeenth-century painters, did not paint such scenes from life; rather, he composed them in his studio on the basis of drawings. One such drawing depicts the standing couple to the right of the sleigh [fig. 2]. Drawings of other individual figures and figure groups also exist. A consequence of this working method is that the same figures continually recur in Avercamp’s paintings. Sometimes he places them in relatively the same position, but often they appear in new arrangements among a different cast of characters. In a finished watercolor from Berlin [fig. 3], a number of figures similar to those in A Scene on the Ice can be found, including the figure in the horse-drawn sleigh, the man leaning down to tie his skate, and, in reverse, the young couple skating hand in hand.[4] A painting that has close compositional relationships to A Scene on the Ice is one of Avercamp’s masterpieces, his Winter Scene on a Frozen Canal in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art [fig. 4]. Not only are the landscape elements identical, but there are no fewer than fourteen figure groups that equate to those in the Washington painting. Certain of these are in comparable locations, while others are repositioned, as in the vignette of the father pushing his wife and their pointing child in a sled, which appears on the right edge of the Washington painting and the left center of the LACMA painting.[5]

The many relationships between the Washington and LACMA paintings suggest that these two works were created in close chronological proximity. Stylistic evidence indicates that Avercamp executed the LACMA painting around 1620, at a time when he favored compositions with relatively small figures and with a loosely structured pictorial organization.[6] A date for the Washington painting around 1620 is also consistent with the dendrochronological examination of the panel, which indicates a felling date for the oak panel between 1606 and 1616.[7] Logic dictates that Avercamp executed A Scene on the Ice shortly after the LACMA painting since it is a somewhat simplified variant of that ambitious work. Not only is the landscape more schematically rendered, but the painting also contains far fewer figures and they are not as coherently integrated as they are in the LACMA version.

The LACMA painting is so finely conceived that it seems probable that it was a commissioned piece. The Gallery’s painting was most likely painted for the open market; in any event, Avercamp did not give it the same degree of attention that he allotted to Winter Scene on a Frozen Canal.[8] The removal of extremely discolored natural resin varnish and old restorations in 2015 has revealed that the condition of A Scene on the Ice is far better than had been previously believed [fig. 5].[9] Although some of the figures have suffered from Abrasion, and a few damages exist in the sky and immediate foreground, the painting has retained its soft atmospheric character to a remarkable degree. While the grain of the wood panel is evident, it does not have a particularly deleterious effect on the appearance of image. Moreover, the misconceptions of a previous restorer's Repainting, which had negatively affected the appearance of the painting, were rectified during the painting’s recent restoration. For example, a pole with a fish hanging at its tip was previously seen stuck in the ice in the middle of the composition instead of being held by the boy skating hand in hand with a girl, as is the case in the LACMA painting. Another error in an earlier restorer’s interpretation was that the man tying on his skate in the lower left was being watched by a small bird. The “bird” was actually the restorer’s creation, and was a misinterpretation of the shape of the man’s right skate resting before him on the ice.

[1] In the catalogues for the 1934 and 1938 exhibitions in which it was included, the painting was described as having been previously in the collection of the Hermitage. However, the picture is not listed in any of that museum's collection catalogues.

[2] Labels from the 1933 and 1934 exhibitions both say that Katz was the “exhibitor,” but they give two different names as the “owner” (removed from the back of the painting, now in NGA curatorial files). The owner’s name on the 1933 label is difficult to decipher, but appears to be two initials followed by “te H.” The owner’s name on the 1934 label clearly reads “J.M.B. Beuker Heelsum.”

Technical Summary

The support, a single oak panel with a horizontal grain, has been thinned and a cradle attached. Dendrochronology shows the panel to be from a tree felled between 1606 and 1616.[1] Triangular wood inserts replace the bottom right and left corners. The wood grain is quite prominent, due to increased transparency of the aged oil paint and moderate abrasion overall. A thin, smooth, white ground layer is followed by a coarse, granular, gray imprimatura. The horizontal, striated strokes of the imprimatura application, visible through the thin sky, are incorporated into the design of the foreground figures.

Paint was applied in thin, smooth transparent layers with more opaque paint used in the details and white highlights. Very fine contours were applied around the figures with liquid black paint. While discrete losses are few, the paint surface has been heavily abraded, most notably in the sky near the right and along all four edges. Some figures in the middle ground were almost totally reconstructed when the painting was restored in the early twentieth century. The horse and most foreground figures have also been reinforced, sometimes quite inaccurately (see text). No conservation treatment has been carried out at the National Gallery.

Hendrick Avercamp, A Winter Scene With Two Gentlemen Playing Colf

English, Nederlands

English

A Winter Scene With Two Gentlemen Playing Colf by Hendrick Avercamp (1585 - 1634). About 1615-1620

Under a pale grey winter sky, a variety of figures enjoy ice skating, sledging and conversing. In the foreground, two men play colf, a traditional Dutch game.

Hendrik Avercamp, was the first Dutch artist to elevate watercolor and gouache drawings to the status of paintings. His skill is visible here in details like the fine pen and ink lines describing the figures, or the delicate gouache coloring suggesting shadows on the ice. His typical monogram is visible in the lower left (the letter H enclosing the letter A), indicating he saw this as a finished work, not a study.

Avercamp was a prolific draftsman, and helped popularize such landscapes with seventeenth-century Dutch collectors. His contemporaries would have appreciated this winter scene on multiple levels. The skaters, some of whom have fallen on the ice, would have suggested the notion of de slibberachtigheyt van 's menschen leven or "the slipperiness of human life," to remind viewers of life's brevity.

Robin Bargmann, december 2016:

Colf Playing and Skating Near a Town. c. 1610 - 1620. Hendrick Avercamp (Amsterdam, 1585 - 1634, Kampen)

The bare tree silhouetted against the lighter background enhances the wintry chill of this picture. This artist was the first to specialize in the winter panorama, scenes he depicted with satisfying and interesting detail. Hendrick Avercamp was an astute observer of people, carefully recording gestures and activities to lend a sense of everyday life to his subjects. He sometimes repeated the same figures in subsequent paintings without losing the individuality of the people engaged in their daily tasks.

Hendrick Avercamp, Colfspelers op het ijs. Ca. 1620

Eisvergnügen, 1630. Hendrick Avercamp

Frozen River with Skaters and Colf Players

Of all the different categories of seventeenth-century Dutch landscape, it is the winter landscape that makes the clearest reference to the origin of the genre: the precedents of modern landscape painting were the depictions of seasons and months in the mediaeval Book of Hours. In these illuminated calendars, the depictions of activities typifying each season or each month, usually set in landscapes, accompanied texts on the moral lessons of the passage of time. In the sixteenth century, Pieter Bruegel the Elder's panel paintings set off the development of several kinds of autonomous landscape painting. His Hunters in the Snow (1565, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna), a piece from his magnificent series, long served as a model for winter landscape specialists. Recent research has linked the extraordinary fashion for representations of winter to climatic change in Northern and Central Europe that caused relatively long, hard winters from 1550 up to about 1800, with much snow, the period known to science as the "Little Ice Age".

In the Netherlands, Hendrick Avercamp was the first master to specialise in depicting the joys of winter. Throughout his career, he exclusively painted snowy landscapes and frozen canals, with hosts of figures sledging, skating and hurrying after their daily task. In Amsterdam, where he spent his formative years, he familiarised himself with the Flemish precedents to the genre. The composition of the small-size Budapest picture recalls the Flemish model: the tondo format itself is a feature of sixteenthcentury Flemish landscape series, and the raised viewpoint and the relatively elevated horizon are based on the panoramic landscapes. The meeting of the sky and the land in the middle of the picture field opens up space for landscape motifs and activity on the ice. The trees and buildings rising on both banks of the capriciously meandering river both lend a special character to the landscape and adapt it to the circular picture surface. What we see is reality, but a reality which the artist has constructed from deliberately selected elements and made authentic by perfect, naturalistic rendition of the details. The red brick buildings to the left, with smoking chimney and icicles hanging from the snowy roof, the hens pecking in the yard, the fishing boat listing and frozen into the water in the centre, the windmill in the distance and, even further away, the towers fading into the mist, are all painstakingly observed and faithfully rendered details of reality. Slightly apart from the busy group of skating and walking figures, an old man approaches, as if towards us, with a basket of victuals on his arm. This white-bearded figure wearing a fur-edged hat features prominently in several of Avercamp's paintings, and harks back to his precursor personifying winter or the month of February. A symbolic element is thus combined with reality. The handling of delicate diffuse light and atmospheric perspective betrays the influence of the pioneer of Dutch landscape painting, Esaias van de Velde, and attests to an understanding of the new artistic devices. This allows the painting to be dated to Avercamp's mature period, after 1620.

Hendrick Avercamp, Game of kolf on the ice

Game of kolf on the ice

Overview

Creator - Hendrick Avercamp (1585 - 1634)

Creation date - c. 1620

Materials - Pen and brown ink with brown wash, watercolour, red chalk and bodycolour over traces of graphite

Dimensions - 17.6 x 23.8 cm

Acquirer: George III, King of the United Kingdom (1738-1820)

Provenance: Lot D216 in the Abraham van Broyel sale, Amsterdam, 30 October 1759; bought by Pieter Yver (fl.59 with D215); first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 118: '42. Drawings of some Master in the Stile of Breughel, representing the Diversions of the Dutch and Flemish on the Ice &c: with some Drawings of single figures for the Dresses only')

Description: A drawing of a scene on the ice, with a man on the left, watched by a peasant in a cap, about to putt a ball towards a marker. He is watched by a group of elegantly dressed figures and a dog on the right. A woman skates forward from the centre. In the background are two sleighs and a sledge drawn by caparisoned horses, and numerous skaters and walkers.

The deaf-mute Hendrick Avercamp, based in the provincial Dutch town of Kampen, was the first Netherlandish artist to specialise in paintings (and drawings) of winter scenes. Here he has drawn a game of kolf op het ijs, the winter version of kolf in which players hit a ball towards a pole; the fashionable costumes of the onlookers suggest a date of around 1620. The Royal Collection holds roughly one-third of Avercamp’s surviving drawings, many attractively finished in watercolour and probably made to be sold rather than as studies for paintings. That was no doubt the immediate purpose of the present drawing, although the figure of the man playing kolf and the sleigh in the background are to be found in a circular painting by Avercamp of a winter landscape in the Kunsthalle, Hamburg.

Michiel Plomp has identified in the Royal Collection around sixty drawings that were included in the auction of Abraham Van Broyel’s collection, held in Amsterdam on 30 October 1759 and succeeding days. These were among over a hundred Dutch and Flemish drawings acquired at the sale by the dealer Pieter Yver (1712-87), who, if not acting directly for the Prince of Wales, presumably sold the group of sixty to the Prince (or King) shortly thereafter. The present drawing was probably one of a pair by Avercamp in the van Broyel sale. Each was described as ‘A Winter scene with many figures, drawn with washes, height 5, width 8 inches’; the second drawing depicts Two ladies and a gentleman on a horse-drawn sleigh, the measurements of which correspond closely with those given in the sale catalogue.

Hendrick Avercamp, IJsgenoegens

Skating Scene by Hendrick Avercamp (1585 - 1634). Ca. 1615

Avercamp's "Skating Scene" echoes Pieter Bruegel's "Winter Landscape" in many respects. Yet in his painting the didactic message is relegated to the background. The picture combines elements of the landscape and the genre scene. The frozen river by the walls of Kampen is alive with skaters, people fishing through holes in the ice and peasants with sledges. The figures are united by everyday interests: a cavalier is fixing his lady's skate, while a young boy looks on inquisitively, and further off we see figures playing ball, pulling an old man along in a sledge or taking a dog for a walk. There is even a custodian of the peace with a gun. The line of the horizon divides the picture in two: this is not a panorama, as in Bruegel's picture, but a painting of a small scene in a real place. The winter countryside is depicted as the natural surroundings of individual people.

Hendrick Avercamp, Winter Fun in an Icy Polder Landscape

Deutsch, English

Deutsch

Winterliches Vergnügen in vereister Polderlandschaft

Öl auf Holz. 40 x 56,5 cm.

(1171681) (5) (11)

Winterlandscape, by Hendrick Avercamp (Amsterdam 1585 - 1634 Kampen)

Hendrick Avercamp

A famous Dutch landscape painter who was born in Amsterdam in 1585. His teacher there was Pieter Isaaksz. and possibly also G. van Coninxloo. Besides in Amsterdam he also worked in The Hague and Kampen, where his nephew Barend Avercamp was his pupil. He died in Kampen in 1634. He was specialised in winterlandscapes, but he also made some very fine summerlandscapes.

Hendrick Avercamp, Winter Landscape

Winter Landscape, circa 1620. Hendrick Avercamp (Amsterdam, 1585 - 1634, Kampen)

This 'Winter Landscape' by Avercamp, oil on wood, is also named 'Dutch Ice-Scene with Golfer in the Foreground' and 'View of a Walled Fort with Figures Playing on Ice'. It depicts activities on a frozen river leading past a house on the left and passing a high-walled fort on the right. The round tower inside the fort reaches up to the sky and on both sides of the river are spotted frozen boats. Numerous people, young and old, are seen skating, walking or playing games for entertainment. The costumes of the people in the painting indicate that they represented different classes of people in the Netherlands during the early 17th century.

A young boy on the bottom left corner of the painting is blowing his nose while watching two people playing colf. To their right stand two gentlemen and a lady with sunglasses, talking. Another man to their right is playing colf as well. Further up in the picture, there are four men watching another kolfer playing.

Hendrick Avercamp, Winter Landscape. C. 1630

Winter Landscape, by Hendrick Avercamp (Amsterdam 1585 - 1634 Kampen; about 1630)

This crowded winter scene presents a cross-section of Dutch society enjoying a wide range of winters sports, on the frozen waterways. The figures in the foreground with long sticks are playing ‘kolf’, an early form of golf. The walled town in the background was previously thought to be the artist’s native town, Kampen, but is an imaginary site. To the left by the windmill is an inn, indicated by the sign with a white crescent. The brightly coloured figures stand out against the restrained, subtle tones of the landscape.

Avercamp was among the first Dutch artists to specialise in painting winter scenes. His paintings were much admired and commanded high prices during his life. Avercamp was born a deaf-mute and may have lived reclusively because of this. He trained in Amsterdam with Pieter Isaacsz, an established history and portrait painter, before returning to Kampen, a tranquil walled town on the Zuider Zee, where his father was a pharmacist. The town or some of its prominent buildings, often feature in the background of Avercamp’s compositions.

Hendrick Avercamp, Winter scene in Kampen

Winter scene in Kampen. 1615-20. Hendrick Avercamp (Amsterdam, 1585 – 1634, Kampen)
Known as the ‘mute of Kampen’, Hendrick Avercamp painted scenes of everyday life in villages and towns, especially winter landscapes. Kampen is a city in the Dutch province of Overijssel, located north-east of Amsterdam.

This watercolour demonstrates Avercamp’s skills as a draughtsman, and his ability to convey something of the hustle and bustle of life on the ice, such as the man carrying firewood and the people playing games or the sledges that go under and beyond the bridge. The colf player does not play, but is only carrying his club. Watercolours such as this formed a significant portion of Avercamp’s output: they were usually monogrammed and intended for sale on the open market.

Pen, brown ink and watercolour over black chalk on paper, 17.2 x 26.5 cms

RKD, Art-work number 184888:

Francesco Leonelli

Winter landscapes, Hendrick Avercamp. 2008

Hendrick Avercamp was mute and known as "The mute of Kampen" ("De stomme van Kampen"). He specialized in painting the Netherlands in winter. Avercamp's paintings are colorful and lively, with carefully crafted images of the people in the landscape. Lots of humoristic details are to be found into his paintings.
