Frozen river. by Barend Avercamp (1612 - 1679)
Barent Avercamp was born in Kampen in 1612 and died in that town in 1679. He was the nephew and student of Hendrick Avercamp. His work is so like that of his uncle, that until 1930 all of Barent's paintings were classified as by Hendrick. It was assumed that Hendrick's late works were fully signed whereas the early ones were only monogrammed. Almost simultaneously P. de Boer, on the basis of stylistic comparison, and Clara Welcker, on the basis of new archival evidence, discovered the master, Barent Avercamp. Hendrick died in 1634; all works dated after this year are automatically by Barent.
