Village Scene on a Stormy Day in January. Nicolaes Berchem (born before 1 October 1620 - dead 18 February 1683)

Belongs, with the eleven other drawings, to a series of the months. The winter month is represented by a frosty village, barrels being transported on a sledge, and the wind bending the bare trees. At the top is the sign of Aquarius. [Magnusson, Dutch Drawings no. 22]

Drawing, black chalk, grey wash on paper, 14 x 19 cm; passepartout 55 x 42 cm. Traces of framing lines in black ink on three sides. Brown stains. No watermark. Chain lines: 25 mm. Signed upper left, in black chalk, Berghem f. Mark of the Royal Museum (Lugt 1638).
