Maliebaan Utrecht, Nederland. Ca. 1780
Augsburg, 'au Negoce comun de l'Academie Imperiale d'Empire des Arts libereaux', [ca. 1780]. 22,6 x 39 cm. Contemporary hand-coloured etched optical view, heightened with gold, by Balthasar Frederic Leizelt after J. Versteeg, below caption in reverse ('Vuë du Mail d'Utrecht') and "Collection des propects', with captions in German and French below the image.
View of the Utrecht Maliebaan with the Maliehuis in the centre. This print is a fairly accurate copy in reverse of the engraving by P.J. Duret after Versteeg, that was published by J. van Schoonhoven & Co. in Utrecht, 1772. A former owner of this copy has mounted three cut-out figures from a similar print in lower corners (there are traces of a fourth clipping, now lost).
The Utrecht Maliebaan was constructed at the Oudwijkerveld in 1637, measuring ca. 750 metres. A 'maliebaan' was originally a specially constructed ground for playing a game resembling kolf.
Good copy. Slightly soiled and creased, partly trimmed on the plate mark; lower margin strengthened with paper strip on verso.
Cf. S. Muller, Catalogus van den topographischen atlas der stad Utrecht (1878), no.1658 (listing the original print by Duret) and 1659 (listing the original drawing in pencil by J. Versteeg).
Particulier bezit.
