Maliebaan (Pall Mall) London, England

The Pall Mall at St. James, London, from a seventeenth century map by the cartographers Faithorne and Newcourt, first published by Stirk and Henderson. The mall, over a thousand yards in length, enjoyed year-round play as evidence by Samuel Pepys Diary (written in cipher, the code not cracked until 1825), which entries dated 2nd August 1661 and 4 January, 1664. The earlier entry reads: 'To St. James's Park where I saw the Duke of York playing at Pele Mele the first time that I ever saw the sport.' King Charles was reported playing in 1629, and Charles II in 1661.
