Lucas Cranach The Elder, Beugelen. 1532
Melancholy of Lucas Cranach The Elder, 1532
In this picture three cupids play 'beugelen' (ringball or cloish) with an oversized ball, almost as large as the children themselves. In the background is a panorama dominated in the left-hand corner by naked women and a man riding a ram (Aries). The demonic figures emphasize the feeling and mood of melancholy typical of Cranach's ideas on such allegorical themes.
