Although as an artist Jan van de Cappelle was essentially an amateur, he played an important role in the revival of the winter landscape around the middle of the seventeenth century – just as he had done for marine painting some years before. We know of only fifteen winter scenes by him, a number of them – including this painting– are dated 1652 and 1653. The merry ice scenes by Jan van Goyen (cf. no. 33) and those of his generation gave way to a more atmospheric evocation of winter, in which the cold became tangible and human presence a matter of secondary importance.

Bien qu’il ait pratiqué la peinture en dilettante, Jan van de Capelle a beaucoup contribué à renouveler le paysage d’hiver dans les années 1650, comme il l’avait fait auparavant pour la peinture de marines. On en connaît seulement quinze spécimens de sa main, la plupart étant justement datés des années 1652 et 1653. Les joies du patinage telles qu’illustrées dans les tableaux de Jan van Goyen (cf. n° 33) et ses contemporains ont laissé place à une évocation plus atmosphérique de l’hiver, où le froid lui-même devient palpable et la présence humaine insignifiante.
