How the hands should be placed, France. 1717

How the hands should be placed in order to play well.

The master professional illustrates the grip and position of the 'mail' in relation to the 'boule'. The player's hands are about an inch apart. The left hand, fingers close together holds the end of the tapered shaft, slightly choked, with the left thumb along the top of the shaft. The palm of the right hand is under the shaft resulting in a strong grip, with the thumb overlapping the index finger.
