Detail from an Illuminated full-page miniature in French Book of Hours, by The Master of Edward IV group from about 1490. In the lower border two men with crosses shaped like golf clubs, contest a single orange-sized ball in a game of crosse. To the right a companion, crosse resting on his shoulder, approaches to join the game.
