Barend Avercamp, Winter Scene. C. 1650

Winter Scene, c. 1650. Barend Avercamp (1612/1613 - 1679)

Barend was Hendrick Avercamp’s nephew and was influenced by his uncle. In this oil on wood, Barend depicts how people in northern Holland worked, lived and entertained. The painting features an overcast sky, with spectators on the left bank of the frozen river and the bridge watching people enjoying different activities and games. To the right of the painting are two men with high hats playing colf. One of them, with his back towards the viewer, is holding a club in his hands watching his pal playing.
